Travis County Commissioners Precinct 2

Candidate Introductions

Rick Astray-Caneda

Brigid Shea (Incumbent)

Question 1

The Commissioners Court approved a 9.12% property tax rate increase under a disaster provision after severe flooding — a move now being legally challenged as beyond what was necessary for flood response.

How would you ensure future climate adaptation spending (flood mitigation, drought resilience, water infrastructure) is effective and transparent?

Question 2

Recent tax incentive agreements to bring jobs to Central Texas have come under scrutiny for companies failing to meet specific provisions of the agreement.

As a decision maker, held accountable to voters, what do you look for in these types of agreements to ensure community values prioritizing green space are advanced?

How do you balance economic incentives and environmental impacts?

Question 3

The Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority has proposed 4 toll lanes on MoPac South from Cesar Chavez to Slaughter Lane without a full environmental impact statement.

Cherished natural resources – The Edwards Aquifer, Barton Springs, and essential green space are at risk of harm.

How rigorous should environmental review be in studying the impacts and crafting plans for this expansion?

How do you safeguard these essential green areas during engineering and construction phases?

Question 4

Western Travis Co is unique in the challenges faced due to climate change.

Growing droughts, dryer land, growing dangerous storm runoff, more opportunities for fire.

What tools, regulations, funding, resources, should the County employ to protect residents from a growing climate threat?

What are your priorities to ensure progress and transparency?
